If you have obvious GI symptoms going on (digestion, bloating, gas, heartburn, acid reflux, loose stools, diarrhea, constipation, or sluggish bowels) you might want a stool test. But there are some non obvious conditions that also have a GI component, such as autoimmune diseases, hormonal imbalances, and skin conditions, that would also benefit from results of a stool test. Learn about functional stool testing, what it is, how you know if you need it and how it can help you.

Food can be medicine, especially when it comes to balancing your hormones. In this episode, you'll learn how to make simple and effective shifts to your nutrition for hormonal health. We're talking about caffeine intake, seed cycling, detox, and minerals. While we love a good functional lab test here at Team FN, you really can (and should!) move the needle with your hormone health just by starting with the basics - food!
Episode 310: Ways to Naturally Increase Progesterone
Progesterone has always been an unsung hero in our eyes, but now it’s getting its time in the sun - which is a good thing! Progesterone is super important for mood regulation, brain clarity, and thyroid health. That being said, it’s a very common hormone imbalance and the conventional solution is to treat with synthetic Progestin. At Team FN, we start with a root cause approach. Today we’re going to talk about WHY low progesterone is so common, how to identify if you have it, and what you can do about it.

Episode 292: The Power of Bioidentical Hormones — Are They Right for You?
There is a huge spectrum of opinions on the use of hormone replacement therapy. On one side, it’s presented as the only option to balance your hormones, and on the other, it’s villainized.
Today, Erin unpacks it all with Alise Greenfield, a Funk’tional Nutrition Academy graduate and NP with over a decade of experience in both conventional and functional medicine. Their discussion dives into the nitty-gritty of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), how it’s used, and what options are available on the market today. This episode offers a fresh perspective, challenging the narrative that aging for women must simply be accepted as "it is what it is."
Alise Greenfield is a functional medicine nurse practitioner with a focus in women’s health and wellness. Her expertise includes hormone health, period problems, bio-identical hormone replacement and gut health, as well as skin health from an inside out perspective. She received her degrees from the University of New Hampshire. She has over a decade of experience in conventional and functional medicine in various settings. She has also been a patient herself with chronic Lyme and overcame complications by blending these two medicines. These experiences led her to the conviction there is no one right way to health and when combined appropriately, these two modalities can drastically improve people’s lives. Her practice is located in Dover, NH.
When she’s not working, you can find her in the kitchen cooking or baking gluten free treats, in the ocean on her stand up paddle board, spending time with her young daughter and husband, at the gym or reading an entertaining book.

Episode 255: Gallbladder, Bile, Gut Health & Hormones | Legacy Series
When it comes to overall gut and hormonal health, the gallbladder is an unsung hero. It plays a crucial role not just in digestion and your ability to access nutrients in food, but also with detoxification and your hormone systems. Unfortunately early gallbladder issues are often missed in conventional treatment, and while there are instances when removal surgery is necessary, removing the gallbladder typically doesn’t resolve the gallbladder issue.
Today Erin packs an information-heavy episode all about the importance and roles of the gallbladder, bile production, and alerts you to some of the warning signs you may be having issues with your biliary tract. The purpose of sharing this is so you can not just take in this information and comprehend it, but to really take preventative measures BEFORE you get to the point of surgery.
Episode 254: Releasing Shame around Sexual Health with Dr. Jolene Brighten
From reproduction to physical well-being, pleasure, and partner connection, sex is a fundamental part of life–and yet, our society is so uncomfortable with the topic that productive conversations about sex are rare. As a result, many people (particularly women) end up with shame and confusion about their bodies, and questions about what’s “normal” go unasked or unanswered.
Dr. Jolene Brighten’s work answers these questions. In this episode, Erin and Dr. Jolene discuss the origins of shame around sex and pleasure in our culture, answer common questions about odors, discharges, and pain, and explore the orgasm gap and what women can do both physically and with mindset to increase their experiences of pleasure.
Dr. Jolene Brighten is a hormone expert, nutrition scientist, and thought leader in women’s medicine. She is board certified in naturopathic endocrinology and trained in clinical sexology. Dr. Brighten is the author of Is This Normal, a non-judgemental guide to creating hormone balance, eliminating unwanted symptoms, and building the sexual desire you crave.
Episode 223: Fragrances, Hormones & Simple Steps to Healthy Living
In this re-release, Erin answers your questions about the effect of fragrance on your hormones - plus what to be aware of with the products we use on our bodies and in our home.
Most people have no idea how harmful synthetic fragrances can be - or how often we are using them! The chemicals used to create or prolong these “fresh” scents impact our neurological health, metabolism, and immune system.
We’re bringing this topic back to the forefront because Erin will be doing a deep dive on autoimmunity here on the show soon, and exposure to certain chemicals is part of why autoimmune diseases are on the rise.
Tune in to hear why cutting out fragrance is a simple, easy step to healthy living.
Episode 220: Hormone Lab Testing: A Non-Algorithmic Approach
On today’s episode Erin explains the approach she and the Funk’tional Nutritionist Team takes to health, healing, and hormone testing in our private practice and in Your Hormone Revival, our 3-month balancing program to revive adrenal, thyroid, and hormone health through root cause restoration. You’ll hear not just what kind of hormone testing we do, but also WHY we do it the way that we do, all while sprinkling in answers to a lot of your questions about hormone testing along the way. By the end you’ll understand the value of a provider who can not only look at lab markers, but also interpret what those lab markers mean in conjunction with one another, AND in conjunction with YOUR unique context.
Whether you’re looking to test your thyroid hormones, you’re wondering about your estrogen or progesterone levels, or perhaps you suspect something is up with your adrenals or cortisol, you’ll want to tune in to this episode! This also provides valuable information to practitioners who want to understand the true meaning of taking a functional, root cause approach to labs and supporting their clients.

Reproductive health affects EVERYONE, so share this episode with anyone you care about!
Episode 207: Gallbladder, Bile, Gut Health & Hormones: What You Didn’t Know
When it comes to overall gut and hormonal health, the gallbladder is an unsung hero. It plays a crucial role not just in digestion and your ability to access nutrients in food, but also with detoxification and your hormone systems.
Unfortunately early gallbladder issues are often missed in conventional treatment, leading to the formation of gallstones and eventual gallbladder removal surgery. While there are certainly instances when gallbladder removal is necessary, removing the gallbladder typically doesn’t resolve the gallbladder issue. This is because it doesn’t address WHY the gallbladder issues arose in the first place. It’s not a root cause approach.
If you deal with bloating, acid reflux, constipation, hormonal issues, thyroid issues, leaky gut, and particularly if you’re female (and over 40)… you’ll want to listen up!
